Mel Soaring 5: Ancient
Rigby by Shaun Ross aka [Kona] is cool and deserves
a good burning since he was a "former"
LOTW writer : ). Let's take a look at the readme,
shall we? "Ancient Rigby is one of the
very few Quake style castle levels for Quake2.
Using all new textures, this gigantic level
(split into two) uses unique design and curves,
along with over 150 enemies in a blast-fest
style." Blast-fest is right!! There are
plenty of baddies in this one. Room after room
after room of monsters. Now I got a bit lost
after a while because things started to look
the same, and the room after room feel had me
chomping for more, but there is alot to consider
in this SP map. Shaun gives the viewer a great
taste of some underutilized textures. I wouldn't
say that the strong point of Mel is the story
or the play. The SP experience wasn't heavily
mind boggling and only a little backtracking
was necessary. This was more of a survival of
the one that can hang back or strafe-jump kind
of game. It is clear though that Shaun has an
excellent eye for construction and texture placement
and lighting. First thing I thought of when
I entered the game is, "Wow, this guys
should build DM maps." Mel has a great
mood about it, and there were some awesome features
that could be so well incorporated into DM maps.
