This epic nehahra-based episode features four
maps, spanning various medieval/metal themes,
using visuals mainly from ID and Zerstorer.
Architecture quality varies quite a bit throughout
the episode, with smaller uninteresting rooms
and corridors often balanced by impressive frontpieces
and natural rock structures, outlined with streams
of viscera. Elsewhere, more apparent 'Alkado'
trademarks can be found, such as frequent use
of obscure angles, blocky architecture, and
unusual texture combinations. Cast above Alk10's
outdoor areas is an impressive environment map,
and light fog graces the air of maps two and
three, both thanks to Nehahra's engine enhancements.
The visual impressiveness and well-established
atmosphere set the episode well above most other
recent levels by the author.
Kona's accurate perception of gameplay progression
is apparent here, with the first level offering
lots of exploration among various environments,
providing an immersive experience to draw the
player deeper into the episode. The second map
contains more interesting texture combos and
bizarre architecture, giving the impression
to the player of being trapped in an alien world.
Layout is non-linear and open, with the larger
areas having a sort of 'arena' feel to them,
with monsters attacking from many directions.
The third map increases the eerie 'alien' factor
moreso, using dark, bloodstained metal textures,
oppressive lighting, and sprawling layout; with
the map's exit to the rocky outland, again,
providing an odd sense of freedom, in a way.
This proceeds facing a relentless and challenging
arena battle coupled with some spectacular visuals
- both residing in the small end level.
Nehahra's monster AI should ensure that you
get a tough challenge on all skill levels (pulling
down the console and typing 'nomonsters 1' can
override this), but the lack of super-charged
base monster ensure gameplay never gets too
frustrating - especially so when ammo is delivered
in fair supply throughout, with the inclusion
of Nehahra's excellent new weapons. Otherwise,
difficulty escalates well from beginning to
end - from the desolate canyons of the first
level to a blaze of action and pressure in the
end combats. One thing I'd have liked to have
seen more of is the inclusion of more of nehahra's
custom features and effects, as despite the
episode's high quality it doesn't reflect that
well on Nehahra's abilites. Such features could
include exploding walls, new models, rain effects
and earthquakes.
