Fearcraft is one of [Kona]’s earlier
projects, and while you can sort of tell, it’s
still an excellent 3 map set worthy of a download.
Fearcraft establishes a dark mood with it’s
combination of gothic and metal textures and
dreary lighting. Although still well textured
and designed, Fearcraft strikes me as a bit
less interesting than some of [Kona]’s
later maps. Architecture is somewhat simpler,
with more right angles and 90 degree corners.
The story goes that you have trespassed into
the realm of a powerful being. When you refuse
to leave, he attempts to stop your passage with
a horde of Quake monsters. The monster selection
and placement in Fearcraft is its strong point.
On normal the challenge is stiff. You will fight
many Ogres, Vores, Death Knights, Shamblers,
and Nehara Barons over the course of the three
maps and the fights get harder as you progress,
with a steady stream of encounters throughout.
The end of the third map is especially rough
and you will likely find that you have just
enough, if not a bit too little, ammo and health
to beat the final battles. Honestly, I ran too
low on health and ammo to beat the final enemy
of the third map and had to start the pack over.
Therefore I strongly recommend that you conserve
ammo throughout the pack.
Personally I’ve found Fearcraft to be
one of [Kona]’s toughest releases. While
it’s a solid release, I didn’t find
it to be particularly memorable.
