"All the
monsters are in a snow themed mood as they now
represent the Wintry region with dirty white
fur and falling snow hitting their shoulders.
"
Set in a small village, [Kona] has taken a
snow theme and used it unlike anybody else.
Featuring textures from Diakatana and Hexen2,
new skins, new nailgun sound effect, modified
Ogres, added Gremlins, and nice looking architecture,
[Kona] brings life to this medieval village
and breathes new life into single player Quake.
Brumal Quest includes two .bsp files. The first
map consists of the main battles as you struggle
to clear the village of its residents. The second
map is the final battle where you will have
to stand strong to survive. Here we will look
at both maps as a whole.
The design is top notch. Plenty of crossing
paths, giving it a nice feeling of exploration
and an added touch of realism, yet still simple
to navigate. This allows Alk15 to flow at a
steady pace and draw the player further into
the action. The action can get quite fierce,
but weapons and ammo are balanced well. Weapons
featured are the double barrel shotgun, both
nailguns, grenade launcher, and the rocket launcher.
Gameplay is fast but differs from other [Kona]
maps. Featured here is mostly straight action
that is controllable unlike the authors earlier
attempts that have enemies bombarding you. This
makes the level much more enjoyable to play
and gives it a nice professional feel. Most
enemies seem to have been placed in areas that
bettered their performance. Modified Ogres,
who are equipped with rocket launchers, are
placed up high waiting for you to peak around
the corner. Scrags, knights, and hell knights
are also present in large numbers and usually
together. Gremlins (screenshot 2) are also present
and usually attack in packs but don't offer
much challenge. Vores are well placed in areas
that are hard to hit them and easy for them
to lauch their attack upon you and Shamblers
like to appear in areas that you have already
secured, so pay attention. With the exception
of the Vores and Shamblers, all enemies have
new skins to help them blend into the snow enviroment,
a very nice touch.
In my opinion, this is one of [Kona]'s best
maps and should be in every Quake fans archive.
