Back again with a new
review. This time it's "World between the
margin" created by a good mapper named
[Kona]. It's a futuristic themed DM level, best
suited for 1vs1 duels or 2-4 FFA.
Layout A-
When we look at the layout of this level we
can see it's very open, and vertical. It's mainly
built round an atrium, with lots of open corridors
and stairs connecting the four levels with each
other. This level has a few teleporters, which
are very important for the overal layout and
gameplay, because without them the connectivity
isn't all that good, so i think the author made
them onpurpose. Without those teleporters the
gameplay would have been low. When walking through
this level we can see some cool angular architecture
in the layout, some well designed walls and
trims and stairs, which also provides the players
some nice trick-jumps.
Atmosphere A-
World between the margin gives a very cool futuristic
feeling and shows some very cool textures, these
textures are from the Lundoom texture set. With
these textures and the good use of yellow- and
blueish lighting, [Kona] created a level that
on the first hand wouldn't look like QuakeII.
[Kona] used the textures to there optimum, and
because of the well built layout with cool angular
architecture, i can say [Kona] created a great
futuristic atmosphere. The only thing i thought
was out of place, were the teleporters, the
standard id-teleporters are red and yellow and
just don't fit in this atmosphere. [Kona] should
have built costum teleporters to keep the whole
atmosphere as one. The detailing is great and
doesn't affect the r_speeds much, as you could
expect. The lighting is good and really brings
out the quality of those textures.
Gameplay A-, Item plamement
B
is fast and open and you can hardly get any
peace to chat when playing FFA, and camping
isn't an option. I recommend this level as a
duel level, for 1vs1 or a 2vs2 and if you want
FFA, than i recommend 2-5 players. The gameplay
of this level relies on those teleporters, without
them the speed would have been lower and the
carnage bigger in the lower part of this level.
When playing this level i found that it wasn't
easy to follow you opponent, because of the
textures behind the enemy. The Item placement(B)
is quiet good, but the choice of item-placement
could have been better, i thought there were
too many RG slugs and too little grenades. There
are no HB, BFG or Shotgun, which i think is
a good choice. There is one armor, the YA at
the above teleporter, which is a good location,
but i would have placed one more YA in this
level to give both parties armor.
Conclusion A-
[Kona] has done a great job showing us he can
make such a great QuakeII level. Even with the
few HOM and clipping errors [Kona] shows his
experience for making detailed levels with very
good duel gameplay. The item placement could
have been better, maybe he should have tested
it a little more. All well ends well, download
this gem and see what you were reading about.
