This is my second time through
Beyond Belief, and I'm sure i'll do it many
more times. But this time I was impressed enough
to give it a review. Beyond Belief comes as
quite a surprise, as Matthias' previous levels
have all been below average. But right away
it is good. You start off in a couple of base
levels, but it is after these that the episode
really heats up. The standard metal and medieval
themes from Quake have been used, and it looks
even better than ID did with it. The build quality
is very professional, although it's not as detailed
as the levels of today. The layout is always
very good, at times you have a couple of paths
to choose from, but it's fairly linear. However,
you often return to earlier sections to open
doors. The gold and silver keys and put to alot
of use.
The gameplay in Beyond Belief is great. Although
it could have been a little harder, if your
the type who throws strategy out the door and
enjoys just running in firing away (like me)
then you'll have a great time with this. There
is plenty of ammo and health to keep you happy.
And at the end something a little different
- there's no more jogging around Chthon and
standing on buttons to activate very convenient
pillars with lightning guns. This time you have
to actually fight him. But other than that,
there is nothing else new.
This is definitely a classic episode, and certainly
one of the best releases for Quake.
