The Corral is the first i *D*
(not IK) base Q1SP that's been released in a
very long time. Apparently people had given
up on Idbase because it was old and boring blah
blah blah. Well, here's a map that proves them
wrong.
The Corral uses the classic
texture set but it's layout is cutting-edge,
while still remaining an old-school id feel
- probably due to the use of the outdoor courtyard
and some indoor water areas. The looks are very
good, I don't know if I saw a single custom
texture in there - and everything is well built
and well textured, not overly detailed, but
it doesn't need to be. There aren't any texture
misalignments (except one, which may have been
deliberate) and lighting is suitable.
Gameplay is interesting, as
you can either charge around, destroying everyone
who isn't you, or you can play it safe, hang
back and snipe or ambush enemies. I played a
mix of both ways, but mainly the former. On
one hand it was strategically a little smarter
to snipe the foes from around corners in the
level's twisting and interwoven passages, but
on the other hand, I haven't had this much fun
running through a horde of grunts with a supershotgun
in quite some time!
The Corral is map that's original
in its use of a formerly unoriginal theme and
it is also just a very entertaining map.
