The Pit is, to be honest, not one of the better
Q1SP's I've played in a long time. It's not
that it's bad, it's just not that good.
The map is set in some sort
of mining / drainage operation which is really
bright and clean and doesn't suit Quake that
well. The textures are bright and cartoony,
making it seem like a throwback to Duke Nukem
3d. The design consists of a bunch of hallways
carved through rock, two main outdoor areas
with walkways, and a warehouse full of slime.
Gameplay is average - the supplies are fair
and there are enough enemies - but there are
no clever placements of monsters, ambushes,
tense of powerful moments. It's just run and
gun through the whole map, except for near the
gold key room, where there aren't enough supplies
to take on two shamblers. Also, the layout isn't
very linear, so you can go all over the place,
and with most areas looking quite similar and
multiple paths to most areas, despite the small-medium
size of the map it is possible to wander aimlessly
while trying to figure out where you are supposed
to go next.
I'm not saying the map is all
that frustrating to play or that I couldn't
stand the looks, but there are a lot of better
maps out there.
