The Catacombs of Misfortune
is a small Q1SP, set mostly in caves. This map
was the only valid entry for Mr. Shambler's
'Back to Nature' contest whose guidelines were
that the map was to be 75% or more natural terrain
and submitted by July 1.
While overall this map is not
remarkable or outstanding, it is a fun little
map and worth downloading. The combat is enjoyable,
not very tough but still fun. The architecture
is passable, I noticed a lot of repeated elements
- particularly a triangular patch of grass was
much-used - that a bit of variation could have
helped out much. There wasn't much variety in
texturing either. Mostly just the gray caves.
There were a couple sections with sky and one
area with some green stone bricks which added
some much-needed variety to the level. The lighting
I found was pretty good, again not much above
the average standard, but pretty good.
All in all, if you're looking
for something revolutionary or really impressive,
you will be dissapointed. But if you're just
looking for some good Q1SP fun then this map
should suffice.
