The plan with this single Quake
level was to bring together four mappers and
with a common texture set and theme, create
a small section of a map each in only three
hours. Then Than (of apsp1 fame), would combine
the four sections into a full and worthwhile
single player experience.
Than was joined by RPG, Nightcrawler
and Gibbie - an interesting mix of mappers.
This style of mapping was previously used in
Structured Chaos, with Damaul, Lunaran, Xenon
and Than. However the texture combinations and
styles didn't seem as flash and unique as we
have in this new joint speedmap. The original
texture set had a LOT of variety in it, and
a number of different styles could have been
done. Hexen2 was mixed with the underused (only
seen in Vondur's map) Heretic II textures. This
is a very good texture set and the level looks
very different to most Q1 maps. It gives the
feeling of a temple being built into the jungle
and overgrown with vines climbing up the walls.
Brick structures are protrude out of cliffs.
The ending is particularly good as you climb
out of the temple through a steep cave.
The details and designs are
excellent by all of the mappers. There were
no sections that stood out as being lower quality,
just a consistently good level. Which is very
pleasing since I have never seen a SP attempt
from NightCrawler or Gibbie before, while Than
and RPG have released two very good maps already.
Than did an excellent job combining
the four sections with all areas flowing well
into each other. It is hard to pick out who
did which section, and there is alot of returning
to previous areas.
My only main complaint is that
the level felt very tight. The areas are quite
cluttered, but not so much that it ruins that
gameplay. But if you're looking for some of
beautiful views and epic designs you may seen
in games like Unreal and Rune, you'll be disappointed.
This is a tight and typical Quake map.
The gameplay was good. Enough
health and ammo are provided. Unfortunately
I missed the GL, which made ammo slightly lower
heading into the later stages of the map, but
still not too much trouble. There really isn't
a massive end level fight, you can pick them
off one at a time.
Overall, a very good style and atmosphere,
tight interconnective layout and good gameplay.
If you liked the first speedmap, you'll definitely
like this one.
